Multilingual

We speak Czenglish here at home.

Bohunka is born Czech and studied english as part of her studie as financial engineer. I try to study Czech. I love this country with all is faults, bureaucracy, misshaps, laziness, beautifull nature, friendly people and whatever. But not the language.

With its' 7 cases, all words in a sentence have to be adapted, and it doesn't matter in what sorting order you speak the words, czech should understand it. Except when I try to speak it.

The first year here in CZ somebody advised me to start using every czech word I know in the middle of the english, so as to get used to saying them. And gradually learn more words. The problem with learning that way is the grammar, you keep thinking in english grammar and that is jabberish to the czech people.

By now I can do the grand tour of our little fossil museum in czech, but only as long as nobody asks any questions. Meanwhile trying to keep our websites multilingual as well is just way too much. So I do the main website in CZ, EN, DE and NL, but the others from now on will be only one language, depending on the targeted audience.

As this one is targeted at nobody in particular, I like to keep this in english. Not my natural home language, but I like it because it allows for quicker thinking in english than in dutch. If you are dutch, and kept reading this article so far then you'll probably agree.
